The Importance of Content

Posted: Thursday, March 25th, 2010

You’ve probably heard it said before but your online success really IS largely about content. From individuals visiting your website to investigate your offering, to link building and search engine optimisation (SEO) strategies, the content contained within your website is of utmost importance.

Good and frequently updated content will:

  • cause people to visit your site
  • to engage with you
  • to come back
  • cause the search engines to visit your site more frequently
  • cause your website to rank higher
  • cause more people to link to your website

Your content must appeal to your target audience and align with your search engine objectives, be engaging, interesting, relevant and easy to understand.

Visitors will be looking to gain relevant knowledge that is informative and causes them to take action, whether they bookmark your website as a source of useful information or proceed to contact/purchase from you. Google will use your content to determine your website relevance in a keyword search result. The more relevant and focused your content is, the more likely your website will be shown. Industry experts and PR companies trawl the internet for relevant websites that they can link to which can provide you with free exposure and new channels for leads and enquiries.

Create content by writing news and articles about the industry that your product or service is in.

Always remember to check your new content for grammar and spelling mistakes, as mistakes can make your appear unprofessional.

So where does your content come from?

You have a few options. You may write it yourself, you can re-write someone else’s ideas, putting your slant on them or you can employ a copywriter. What you don’t want to do is simply copy someone else’s material.

What should you do with the content?

Well, naturally, put it on your website, but you should also think about how else you can re-use it in order to maximise the return on your endeavour. e.g. a newsletter, on Facebook, on Twitter Equally, when you put the content on your site, you can make it easy for your readers to share your content through bookmarking tools or possibly RSS feeds.

What do you need?

You need time, motivation and a way of editing content on your website such as a content management system (CMS). One of the best and most easy to use systems that I have come across is the blogging software, WordPress, and we use this for most of our customer CMS implementations. If you would like this setup on your website, please let me know.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
