What to think about for a mobile website?

When you are planning for a mobile version of your desktop PC website, it would be wise to take quite a different view on the content and how it is presented.  See example image below.

Of course most well-built websites work on a mobile device, but they often are not very usable.  Hard to read, fiddly to press buttons, difficult to navigate links – all symptoms of a website that has been created for a Desktop PC but is being used on a much smaller device.

Do you adapt or react?

Do you adapt your business to an ever changing environment or simply panic and react when your business is failing? If it is the later, it maybe too late.

It is in our very nature to be scared of change, to fear the unknown and be afraid of failure. Yet nothing is as important to the survival of your business as change. In order to continue to meet the needs of your customer the worst thing you can do is stand still. History is full of examples of large and small businesses that failed to change and that are now extinct.

Surfing using mobile devices set to soar

According to a recent study by ComScore there has been an 87% increase in the use of smartphones and tablets to access online retail sites.  In another very recent survey by IAB, 20% of American mums use their phone for shopping.

Whilst not everyone intends to buy in this way, those that choose to are actually finding that they can’t. For example, in the luxury brand market, mobile-optimised sites are few and far between, with less than one third offering mobile commerce functionality at all. Possibly a little short-sighted since it’s this audience who are more likely to own and purchase using mobile devices!

With mobile sales expected to increase five-fold over the next 5 years, is your site able to take advantage of this growth?

Mobile and tablet paid search clicks up 180%

Last year saw a large increase in the UK for the number of clicks on paid search adverts (e.g. AdWords) on mobile devices. This observation has been made in a recent Marin Software report where they investigate the reasons for this growth.

Does your website work on an iPhone?

You may not have an iPhone and therefore consider this a topic unimportant. However the iPhone and its stablemates, iPod Touch and iPad are very well established, between them making up 55% of mobile searches!  They matter.
