Are Mobile Responsive Websites Worthwhile?

When it comes to updating your website or having a new one created then everybody who knows what they are talking about will recommend that you have a mobile responsive website.  A mobile responsive site is one that provides a different view of the site depending on the device that it is being viewed on.  This means that people viewing your site from a mobile will be presented with an optimised functional and usable website, despite the smaller screen space.  The question that many people will be asking is ‘is it worth the extra cost?’

A/B Testing To Compare Changes To Your Site

So how would you go about testing the effectiveness of a mobile responsive site compared to an unresponsive one?  Or any changes you may make to your site?  Whilst you could just make the changes and compare the stats for the two different forms of the site over a time period of the same length there are many other factors that can come into play such as seasonal changes.  The best way to carry out these sorts of tests is to use A/B Testing.  This involves having both versions of the site live at the same time, with  visitors to the site being split evenly between the two.  This is the method of testing used by MECLABS to assess how worthwhile responsive sites actually are.

So Are They Worth It?

Through the use of A/B testing this experiment was able to directly compare how effective the responsive version of the site in question was against the unresponsive version.  The “success” of each site was measured as the number of people that signed up for a free trial.

After the test was completed they compared the conversion rate of each version of the site to see which one of them performed best.  The unresponsive site had a conversion rate of 3.71% whilst the responsive site had a conversion rate of 5.80%.  Meaning that the responsive site led to an increase in the conversion rate of the site by 56.41%

From this test, we can see that there was value in having a responsive site.  This is because more and more people are using mobile devices like smartphones and tablets to browse the internet.  So if your site doesn’t function well on these devices then you are likely to lose many visitors that come to your site on one.
